When Britney Spears made headlines for her sexual behavior as a young recording artist, parents were new to the idea of a young star flaunting her sexuality.
Now, the latest Disney-gone-dirty star, Miley Cyrus, is making headlines for her European music video "Who Owns My Heart?"
Cyrus, who is only 17, appears in the video rolling around on a bed in underwear and tank top and then dancing suggestively in hot pants and a barely-there blouse at what seems to be a club that she would probably not even be legally allowed to enter.
While the song and video were only released in Europe this month, the video is available online, which means international hardcore Miley fans were able to watch her scandalous dance moves as soon as they reached unrestricted Internet access despite their parents' disapproval.
According to a www.FoxNews.com article, Tim Winters, president of the Parents Television Council (PTC), told TMZ Miley's sexualized video contradicts everything she has done to earn her fan base and it saddens him to see her turn her back on her foundation so quickly.
The PTC who, according to their website, is "a non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment" is the PETA equivalent to TV, complaining about anything remotely offensive.
However, in this case, they may have some merit, despite the fact that they have no control over something released in Europe or over the Internet.
Who can blame them for trying to learn and improve from history?
Like Britney, Miley has millions of young fans that idolize her like she has a god complex, and this up-and-coming star is conceding to the intense pressures to stand out in the urge to make a name for herself.
While it seems Miley is a victim to Hollywood's curse, pushing her to grow up too quickly, the PTC makes it seem like she can never grow from her Disney beginnings, like she will be a teenager forever.
However, Miley is 17 going on 30. Where is her famous-again father, Billy Ray, who continually says on the news media that he is looking out for her best interest? He is probably looking out for his pocketbook.
This odd parent-child relationship is reminiscent of Britney's estranged relationship with her mother who recently published a book about her rise to fame and how she maintained normalcy in the industry.
A clear lack of parental guidance on the part of Miley's parents is obvious when it was reported in 2008 that 15-year-old Miley moved in with her 20-year-old boyfriend. At least it wasn't Kevin Federline.
How the public perceives Miley is entirely up to how she decides to present herself. At this point her rebellion is an attempt to grow up despite the public pushing her back telling her to remain young.
She is just an angry teenager who is not confident enough to stand on her own merit and must rely in theatrics to gain notoriety.
From extreme sexuality and elaborate shows to poor decisions leading to unsatisfactory media attention, Miley is a developing clone of Britney.
In an effort to be unique, Miley has become one of the most predictable.
Next thing we know she will be randomly getting married and shaving her head, something that probably all the parents of PTC fear most, but until "Who Owns My Heart?" makes it to the U.S., they have no power.
All the public can do is sit by and watch history repeat itself.
